Twenty

Theo’s eyes darted forward, locking onto his next target. A guy with legs pumping so wildly it looked like he’d stolen them from a panicked deer.

What Theo didn’t expect was how frustratingly difficult it was to close the gap between him and Deer Legs. Maybe it was because he’d already been running for what felt like an eternity, and his stamina was circling the drain. Or maybe… maybe that ridiculous flailing was actually effective.

Really? This is what’s working?

Am I actually losing to someone doing that?

He had to do something. He had to catch up to Deer Legs. For the first time, the streets offered him an advantage. In one desperate move, Theo grabbed anything solid within arm’s reach. A small crate. A loose cobblestone. A bowl of soup? He flung them one by one at his target.

Wow. I’m a disaster. Time for Plan B.

“Hey, Twig Legs!”

No reaction.

“You dropped your dignity back there!”

Still nothing, although Theo swore that Deer Legs hesitated for half a second. Feeling encouraged, he tried again.

“Nice form, buddy! Did a drunk gazelle teach you that?”

Deer Legs turned his head ever so slightly this time, just enough to glance over his shoulder.

“Oh, there it is!” Theo shouted, smiling.

Deer Legs looked back thoroughly and then, without breaking stride, raised his middle finger high and proud. Theo blinked.

Well, okay then. Challenge accepted.

The half-elf pushed harder as his breath tore out in short bursts. The gap between them shrank with every step until Deer Legs hovered just beyond arm’s reach.

One step, then two, then three more, and in the blink of an eye, Theo swung his arm with all the force he had. A shout rang out. The next thing he knew, his body flew sideways, fast enough to feel like a runaway wagon had slammed into him. As for the landing, well, grace didn’t precisely make the trip with him.

He crashed into a man standing at the edge of the alley, sending the poor guy sprawling into a fish stall. The chaos didn’t stop there. Theo landed face-first in a pile of fish, half-draped over the furious man.

"[Surprise Shove], motherfucker! Yeehaw!"

And Deer Legs was gone.

Everything had happened so fast that Theo barely knew what time, place, or universe he was in anymore.

“Get off me!” A man shouted.

Theo blinked just in time to see a pair of meaty fists barreling toward his face, attached to a very angry man with a face twisted in rage.

“Nope.”

Theo shot to his feet, lost his balance on the fish guts, caught himself, and took off without so much as a backward glance. And the man was right on Theo’s heels.

So, Theo ran faster than before. Faster than he thought he even could. Because what else can make you sprint like a centaur on a sugar rush, except when a huge, furious fish-covered man is roaring after you with murder in his eyes?

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck.

If I trip now, I’m dead. Not metaphorically. Not exaggerating.

Dead-dead. Fish guts for a shroud and everything.

Theo sprinted down the alley, narrowly dodging a stack of crates and veering sharply around a corner.
